Karla's Therapy Approach: Finding the right psychologist is important. Every psychologist works differently, and I hope this gives you a sense of how I approach therapy and whether it feels like the right fit for you. My work is grounded primarily in psychodynamic psychotherapy, relational theory and mentalization. Rather than focusing only on reducing symptoms, therapy aims to understand you as a whole person - your relationships, emotions, personality, life experiences and the patterns that continue to shape your wellbeing. Greater understanding often leads to improved emotional regulation, healthier relationships and more enduring change. I also integrate approaches such as CBT, I-CBT, EMDR 2.0, Schema Therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and DBT skills where appropriate. These approaches provide useful strategies, but my primary focus is helping you develop a deeper understanding of yourself rather than simply learning techniques. Alongside emotional wellbeing, I value rehabilitation psychology, supporting people to engage more fully in work, study, relationships and the activities that give life meaning through practical change. Level of pain and willingness to change are important components of therapy progress, and are considered in determining best supports. Many of my clients attend therapy over the longer term - e.g. years. Difficulties involving trauma, attachment, personality and longstanding emotional patterns often require time to understand and change. Although weekly therapy can be beneficial, many people attend approximately monthly for financial or practical reasons. Meaningful progress can still occur, although change is often slower. Together we will determine a frequency that best suits your needs and circumstances. This is a fee-paying service and that needs to be considered when starting therapy. Where trauma therapy is appropriate, I generally prefer to work face-to-face. Trauma processing usually begins once there is sufficient safety and stability. It is not uncommon for GPs, psychiatrists and psychologists to have different perspectives or recommendations. If this ever feels confusing, please bring it to therapy so we can discuss it openly together. The therapeutic frame and consistency of therapy are important to me. This means appointments are booked well in advance, clients rarely cancel, and sessions remain consistent and predictable. I also place a high value on providing a professional, responsive, and caring service throughout your time with The Happy Clinic. Thank you for considering working with me. I recognise that seeking therapy takes courage, and I consider it a privilege to work alongside you as you make sense of your life experiences. With great respect for your bravery, Karla Johnston. Please note that Karla is unable to provide services in situations involving active domestic violence. If you are experiencing active domestic violence, please seek support from an appropriate specialist service.
